Pre race comment

Kazuki Nakajima - "I think there will be some expectation from the fans because I’m the only Japanese driver at the moment so I’m a bit more nervous for this race. The atmosphere will be great though and I’ll just do my best to relax, enjoy the weekend and hopefully bring home some points. I’m really excited about my home grand prix and this will be the first time I’ve been back to Fuji for three years. It used to be my F3 team’s home track so I lived in the area for a year. It feels really good to be going back, and this time I’ll be driving a Formula 1 car so I can’t wait."

Nico Rosberg - "After our second place in Singapore, we want to go to Japan with the same momentum and continue our high. Fuji Speedway might not be the best circuit for our car but weather could play a big part in the proceedings this weekend. Last year’s race was a washout and there’s a strong possibility it will rain again this year. If that happens, we’ll have a good chance of a strong finish as our car goes well in the wet."

Lewis Hamilton - "I think I learned something when I was behind David Coulthard in Singapore: previously, you'd tell yourself to be consistent and avoid any unnecessary mistakes - but it's one thing saying it and another to do it, And once you get in the car, it can be hard to stop the instincts you've been developing since you were eight years old. But I actually think Singapore was a good learning experience: there was less pressure to achieve a victory because of the unusual circumstances, which meant I was actually able to start thinking of the world championship. I hate driving for points, but I think we can all see the benefit of that approach at the moment."

Bob Bell (Renault technical director) - "For me it was the Fernando of old. He never gave up and when the time came to really push hard to gain an advantage he did so and brought home the maximum points. There was certainly an element of luck with the safety car, but Fernando had been on it all weekend and after the second safety car he pulled out an immediate gap over (Nico) Rosberg and (Lewis) Hamilton, which confirmed the pace of the car and what an outstanding job he did. He was very pleased for the team as well and I think it showed him that we still have the potential to go out and win races. He saw us return to the sort of form that we used to enjoy and that meant as much to him as the victory itself."

Fernando Alonso - "We worked hard to develop some new parts for Singapore, but also for the final three races of the season so I think that we can be on the pace in Fuji. We will give our maximum to try and make that the case. After our victory in Singapore, the whole team is determined to have those feelings again as soon as possible. We must remain focussed and try to repeat our level of performance from Singapore to fight at the front. However, I remain realistic as it will be difficult to race the Ferraris and McLarens, but we will give our maximum to score as many points as possible because the fight for fourth in the championship remains very close."

Giancarlo Fisichella - "To tell you the truth I have not noticed any friction. I guess every team wants to be competitive, and for this reason there are discussions among team members and maybe arguments. But we have never suffered because of that. If anything, our position down the field has been a bigger incentive to continue to push. I only know that my boss, Vijay Mallya, has promised me a good car in 2009 and I trust him one hundred percent. We are always moving forward and we have kept up with the field with honour. But every other team has done the same and this is why our progress is so little noticed."

John Howett (Toyota team president) - "I am confident we can finish fourth this season because I know we have the potential and the will to achieve our targets. However, this team does not exist to finish fourth; we exist to win. Therefore we have other targets over the remainder of the season. We aim to improve our performance relative to the other teams and that means fighting for podium finishes - we are aggressively developing the car in order to do that. At the same time we must continue the strong progress we have made on the 2009 car. This is not an easy task but nothing about Formula 1 is easy and we are ready for the challenge."

Nick Heidfeld - "I'm very pleased about this announcement and about the confidence that the team have shown in me. I've always said that I was happy to stay with BMW Sauber because we’ve managed to achieve what we set out to do at this stage and I really hope that we will be battling it out for the title itself next year. There have been times this season when neither I nor the team could honestly say that we were satisfied with the way things were going, but we have always pulled together and come through.”
