Pre race comment

Pre race comment

Felipe Massa - "A positive dayThis is only the start of the weekend and
there is still a lot of work to do, but we have got off on the right foot. The
car is handling well, especially on the harder tyres, but we know track
conditions will improve so it is too early to draw conclusions. I think we
will be competitive: whether we will be more or less so than our rivals, I
cannot yet say."

Kimi Räikkönen - "At the start of the day, we had a well balanced car
and then, in the afternoon, we tried a modification to the front end that
we had tried at the Mugello test last week, but it did not produce the
effect we hoped for, but there was not enough time to switch back,"

Fernando Alonso - "The first day of work has gone well. The circuit is
interesting, very bumpy in places, especially into turn number seven,
and we have to keep an eye on that because it can become a problem.
In terms of the lighting, when I walked the track I was impressed, but
behind the wheel at 300 km/h some parts of the track are a bit dark. But
despite that, this is an amazing opportunity for the spectators to attend
a night race and I am satisfied with my day."

Nelsinho Piquet - "It was an interesting experience to drive today during
the night and the organisers have done a remarkable job to make this
possible. The behaviour of the car felt good and it reacted well to the
different set-up options that we tried. However, we still have a bit of work
to do ahead of qualifying tomorrow, but the first signs are encouraging."

Nico Rosberg - “In general I think we can be quite happy with our
performance today. We have started well and I feel quite confident that
we can have a good weekend. Of course there is some way to go to see
how we will shape up with the competition around us.”

Kazuki Nakajima - “In the second session I had a bit of a moment as I
made contact with the wall, but fortunately the damage was minor and I
could complete the planned programme,” he said. Looking ahead, I know
exactly the places on the track where I need to improve and I will have a
good go at this tomorrow. t’s a very tough track, hot and bumpy, probably
the bumpiest track surface we encounter all season. As a consequence,
I think it will be a pretty demanding race. The grip level is not at all bad,
maybe a little low at the moment, but by the time we get into qualifying
and the race, the track will have rubbered in well.”

Timo Glock - "I am really looking forward to this race because I believe we have a good chance to score more points. Things didn't work out for us in Monza, with the changing track conditions coming at just the wrong time for our strategy and the fight for fourth in the constructors' championship isvery close now. We are really motivated to come out on top." After Friday -
"They were both quite difficult sessions for me today. The track is really bumpy and the car is quite tricky to handle at the moment. It was a different experience driving in the lights and the whole track is a bit unusual. At the end of second practice I just lost the car when I hit a kerb and that was it, I made contact with the barrier. But that didn't affect our programme and overall we got through a lot of work today, so it was successful in that sense. So far I am not totally happy with the car and we have quite a lot to improve but I will sit down with my engineers and I'm sure we will make progress before qualifying."

Jarno Trulli - "High-downforce tracks suit our car very well and after bad luck in Spa and Monza I am looking forward to returning to the points" Defends 'safe' U-turn - “In first practice unfortunately I had a spin at the last corner and I wanted to move off the racing line as safely as possible, so I decided to go down the pit lane,” he said. I took the quickest and safest option available to me and the other cars. I have been penalised and I accept that but I know I did the safest thing for me and the other drivers – it is one of the quickest corners on the track and you don't want to have a crash there. We have been improving gradually throughout the two sessions, We are trying to find the right set-up and we have changed quite a lot on the car."

Sebastian Vettel - “I’m not happy with my car yet as it feels very loose and I don’t think we will have an easy time. So tonight we must work hard to improve it and hopefully make a step forward tomorrow.”

Sebastien Bourdais - “It’s a very nice track but, unfortunately, the quick parts are the bumpiest and so we are having to run the cars quite high, which obviously reduces performance. Globally the car is not too bad and today we have been trying to find the best set-up and assess the two types of tyre. There are no worries about running under the lights and I even ran with a lightly smoked visor. There are hardly any shadows and you can see very well.”

Nick Heidfeld - “Overall I had a good first practice day here, although my fastest lap from the second session doesn't give that impression."

Robert Kubica - “As expected the track is quite demanding – not only for the driver but also for the car. You are always going round corners and the surface is very bumpy, especially in two or three places. It is very important to have a stable car here as you can easily lose a lot of time in several corners. On the first lap I got used to the track and, as I was going at a good pace immediately, we were then able to start working on the set-up. In the second session we did the tyre comparison. Now we have to analyse the data andsee what we have to change for tomorrow.”

Pre race comment

Kimi Raikkonen - “Clearly the championship situation is what it is, but
I’m not the sort to give up that easily.”

Felipe Massa - "It is now looking very interesting in terms of the
championship, as I am just two points behind, but there are still five
races to go and we need to do a good job. I am really motivated to have
a great race there, especially in front of all our home fans, but we need
to concentrate and be strong all weekend.

Arriving at Monza as the winner of the last race is a boost, and we also
had a good test there the week before Spa. We did a lot of mileage,
which was important from the reliability point of view, especially on the
engine front, which will be a key element for the coming races. We also
did a lot of mileage running the low downforce Monza aero package, and
I think the results were generally okay. Thanks to some changes on the
suspension, we managed to improve the way the car works over the kerbs,
which is so important at this track.

Let's wait and see what happens. Personally, I can't wait to be back on
the race track after that unusual Sunday afternoon in Spa."

Timo Glock (having reluctantly accepted the penalty at Spa) - "We have
to push hard to score points because every point is important to us in the
fight for fourth in the constructors' championship.

We have the hard compound Bridgestone tyres again so warm-up might be
a bit tricky, although I expect the weather will be much better than in
Belgium so that should help.

The test went pretty well for us and we did some good work on the Monza
aero package but you never really know what the situation is in testing.

We'll have to wait and see on but we definitely have the potential to score
more points.”

Robert Kubica - "Looking at what happened last season, where Kimi had
a huge gap with two races to go and he won the championship, you have
to try your best and that's what I am trying to do. I am trying my best to
try and fight for the championship. From my point of view it is very clear.
I am a racing driver and I am fighting for my best, and when I am doing my
best I am doing it for myself and for the team. It is clear that if I score
eight points they go to the team and to my account, but maybe the priority
of late of the team has been a bit different from myself. That is why you get
this feeling, and to be honest I also get this feeling a bit, that maybe I am
the only stupid one or crazy one who is thinking about fighting for the
championship this season. While there is the chance I have to go for it
and I hope the team is doing the same, and I believe they are trying."

Lewis Hamilton - "I still have a two-point lead and we are going to make
sure that we just continue to attack and perform like we did in the last
two races. He (Massa) is the one who has to work damn hard to keep up
with. I feel like I'm coming here off a win, and moving onto the next race."
sual Sunday afternoon in Spa."
